When you observe the same mountain year after year, it always seems to look the same. But this is not the case. The mountain is actually changing every day! It is literally being eaten away by ‘erosion’.
Natural forces like wind, rain and forest constantly wear mountains away. Little by little, these natural forces remove rock particles from the mountain and alter their shape. Natural erosion is slow. It may be hundreds of millions of years before an entire mountain disappears.
Erosion affects our spoil and fields as well. Human beings can speed up erosion. When people cut down or overgraze the grasslands, they expose the soil. The forces of erosion then operate faster, stripping way good soil and making fertile land barren and useless. Such human activities are causing major problems in the Himalayas, the world’s tallest mountain ranges.
